Not only is a well-built, spacious deck the ideal location for outdoor gatherings, but it also raises the value of your house, which will be a future benefit to you if one day you decide to sell your home. Decks and patios can also make your outdoor space more enjoyable, providing a place to entertain friends, relax in the sunshine, and enjoy the natural beauty that Central Oregon has to offer! And if you’re somebody who enjoys being outside even when the seasons change, then consider upgrading to a covered deck or patio. They make your living spaces more functional and usable all year!

Adding a deck to your home is a great way to incorporate more gathering spaces while utilizing the property you already have. Whether you want an additional space to spend quality time with your family, host events for friends and colleagues, or simply just want a spot to unwind and relax, a deck is a sure way to create a unique element to your home.

There are several ways to improve the appearance of your outdoor space, but having a deck is where the magic begins.

What can a new deck do for you?

As we mentioned, adding a new deck to your home can increase the overall value of your home. Pursuing a deck upgrade has been found to be among the top projects considered for outdoor home improvements. While you get to enjoy the new deck’s addition to your home, you will also benefit from the increased value that it adds in the  chance that you do decide to sell your home.

While any home improvement project may seem like a costly one, these types of jobs will actually help you out in the long run! This is because it will increase the overall value of your home overtime. Often times, your home improvement project will recover a portion of the costs solely from the property sale. So basically, adding a deck to your home is a win-win situation. You get to enjoy the deck and all the benefits it adds to your home while having peace of mind that it will add value and profit to your future sell.

Another great point to keep in mind is that the cost of creating a new deck is more affordable in areas where outdoor activities are more prevalent throughout the year than it is in areas with more extreme temperatures. Since we live in such a recreational part of the state, decks are more common and affordable for our community. We’d love to get in touch with you and share more of the benefits that a deck could provide for your home. If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out anytime.

Let's talk materials

Real Wood: Cedar and Red Wood

When people consider decking, they often picture real wood decks. Wood decks are extremely common among homeowners. This is due to the fact that wood decks are often less expensive to build and are more enticing to potential buyers.

While wood decks, like Cedar or Red Wood, are less expensive to build, they do build up in cost overtime. It’s important to keep the cost of upkeep in mind when considering these types of decks. They require attention and care, such as sanding, sealing, and staining the deck from time to time. This is because the wood particles are broken down overtime and are susceptible to decay. This does not mean that these types of decks are worth avoiding, though, as they are still great additions to your home! It is just worth considering how much effort and maintenance you are wiling to put into your deck. Our team at Bend Fence and Deck is always happy to help you out with any tips you may need or questions you have when it comes to this type of decking material.

The aesthetic of both Cedar and Red Wood types is widely popular, as they both have a timeless, organic feel. While they are sometimes grouped together, there are notable distinctions between the two. Redwood has a stronger reddish tint than the cedar wood, which is somewhat more on the yellow side. Red Wood boards frequently have a smoother surface and are available in “clear” grade, which denotes that they are made from the resilient heartwood of the tree, have a hardly perceptible wood grain, and are free of knots. Although Cedar and Red Wood are both highly effective for the typical home deck, Red Wood is around 23% stronger. Aside from that, cedar is frequently less costly than redwood.

Options

composite decking

TREX

Easy to maintain composite decking, Trex is a preferred option for homeowners purchasing new decks. This is because of the rising cost of timber and ongoing care that wood structures often require. Trex decking does not require painting, staining, or copious amounts of ongoing maintenance, unlike wood decks. The composite boards only need to be cleaned with a little soap and water or with a short power wash. Trex, which is composted of 95% recyclable materials, is a long-lasting alternative to wood, which is susceptible to decay. This type of decking is built to last up to 25 years and even comes with a 25-year limited warranty, which gives homeowners peace of mind that their decks will last for years to come!

Timber Tech

Engineered with up to 80% recyclable material to be environmentally friendly, Timber Tech is an excellent choice when it comes to affordability – the initial expenditures are just marginally more than for pressure-treated timber. With a 25 to 30-year limited product warranty, you may expect improved performance. Another bonus? There is no need for staining. Ever.

Timber Tech composite decking is designed to appear like your favorite wood species and kinds, and it comes in the widest range of colors and textures, so you may discover your ideal match. With cutting-edge material technology, our decking resists fading and staining and will not splinter, peel, fracture, or decay. As a result, your deck will look and operate brilliantly for decades without the stress and upkeep that you would expect with a wood deck.

Concrete

Concrete is one of the most cost-effective decking materials. Versatile in design, you can make a variety of patterns and designs out of the same batch of concrete. In addition to this, you will spend very little money on the concrete once it is placed since it requires little upkeep. Not only is it long-lasting, but it is also significantly less expensive than other decking materials.

Concrete is adaptable, and it may be used to create a wide range of patterns. Concrete decking, unlike other decking materials, may be customized to have a unique look that is best suited for you! Because concrete is fluid before it dries, it may be molded into any shape or design that you would like. It may be finished with a variety of patterns and colors, in addition to stamping and coloring techniques, to make it more appealing and distinctive. You may have the concrete deck constructed to match the façade of your home. Concrete has been used as a decking material for many years due to its durability and low maintenance.

How to get the deck of your dreams

The materials you choose for your deck will be determined by your personal preferences, money, and how much time you want to spend maintaining it. If you value hassle-free living, go for composite decking. Get cedar or redwood if you like the appearance of wood and don’t mind some annual upkeep. If you want to save money, pressure-treated timber or composite is the way to go.
