Comparing Traditional and Modern Deck Designs: Finding Your Outdoor Aesthetic

A deck overlooking a grass yard with trees.

In the realm of outdoor living, deck design plays a pivotal role in shaping spaces that seamlessly blend with nature while offering functional and aesthetically pleasing environments. The choice between traditional and modern deck designs reflects not only personal taste but also a commitment to creating an outdoor oasis. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the defining characteristics of both traditional and modern deck designs, exploring materials, colors, architectural elements, functionality, and maintenance considerations.

Defining Traditional Deck Designs

Characteristics of Traditional Decks:

Traditional deck designs exude a classic charm characterized by timeless materials and architectural elements. Wood, with its warm and natural appeal, is a staple in traditional deck construction. Common features include detailed railings, ornate posts, and a sense of historical craftsmanship.

Emphasis on Classic Materials:

Wooden decks have a longstanding history, offering a connection to nature and a rich visual texture. The use of traditional materials contributes to a sense of authenticity and invites a nostalgic ambiance that resonates with many homeowners.

Defining Modern Deck Designs

Defining Features of Modern Decks:

Modern deck designs embrace the principles of minimalism, sleek lines, and innovative architectural elements. Contemporary materials such as composite decking, metal, and glass take center stage, providing a clean and sophisticated look.

Innovative Architectural Elements:

Modern decks often showcase innovative architectural elements, including cable railings, built-in planters, and streamlined features. The emphasis is on simplicity and functionality, creating outdoor spaces that feel cutting-edge and effortlessly stylish.

Materials: Traditional vs. Modern

Comparing Traditional and Modern Materials:

Traditional decks predominantly use wood, prized for its natural beauty and versatility. However, modern designs offer alternatives like composite materials from Trex (trex.com) and TimberTech (timbertech.com) . While wood exudes a timeless charm, composite materials provide durability and low-maintenance benefits. A comparison of these materials, considering factors like longevity, maintenance, and aesthetics, aids in making an informed decision.

Colors: Classic vs. Contemporary Palette

Analyzing Color Schemes:

Traditional decks often embrace earthy tones, relying on the natural hues of wood. In contrast, modern designs may explore a broader spectrum, including bold and neutral colors. The color palette significantly influences the ambiance of the deck, creating either a cozy and rustic atmosphere or a contemporary and vibrant setting.

Architectural Elements: Ornate vs. Streamlined

Contrasting Architectural Details:

The ornate detailing of traditional decks, such as carved railings and intricate posts, stands in stark contrast to the clean lines and simplicity of modern designs. Architectural elements play a crucial role in defining the character of the deck, whether it’s a nod to tradition or a celebration of modern aesthetics.

Functionality and Layout: Adapting to Lifestyle

Adapting to Lifestyle Needs:

Traditional decks often feature defined spaces for dining and entertaining, reflecting a more structured layout. In contrast, modern designs prioritize flexibility and multi-functional spaces, accommodating various activities seamlessly. Understanding how lifestyle needs align with deck functionality helps homeowners make choices that enhance their outdoor experience.

Climate Considerations: Shade and Sun

Addressing Climate Concerns:

Traditional deck designs may incorporate pergolas or shade structures for relief from the sun, which is great for our hot, dry summers in Central Oregon. In modern designs, retractable awnings and built-in shades provide adaptable solutions. Considering climate conditions ensures that the deck remains a comfortable and inviting space throughout the seasons.

Shade isn’t the only benefit of having a covered space attached to your deck, however. In a typical winter season, Central Oregon gets plenty of ice and snow. Add a few outdoor heaters, and you can enjoy your deck year-round!

Maintenance: Timeless Appeal vs. Convenience

Comparing Maintenance Requirements:

Wooden decks, while offering timeless appeal, demand regular maintenance to preserve their beauty. Modern designs, often utilizing low-maintenance materials like composite decking, appeal to those seeking convenience. Evaluating the maintenance requirements aligns the deck with the homeowner’s lifestyle and commitment to upkeep.

Blending Styles: Transitional Deck Designs

The Trend of Blending Traditional and Modern:

The growing trend of transitional deck designs seamlessly blends traditional and modern elements. This approach creates a harmonious balance, offering homeowners the best of both worlds. Examples of successful combinations showcase the creative possibilities that arise when embracing a transitional aesthetic.

Traditional decks evoke a sense of history and craftsmanship, while modern designs embrace innovation and clean lines. Understanding these differences enables homeowners like you to make choices that align with your personal preferences, needs, and lifestyle.

Siding Installation and Replacement

If you’re a homeowner, you know how important it is to maintain the condition of your home, especially the exterior. Well-kept siding helps protect your home from wear and tear from weather and preserves its beauty. Look for these signs when inspecting your home’s siding in order to determine whether or not it’s time to replace it:

Cracks & Holes indicate that you need to replace your siding as this makes your home more prone to mold and mildew caused by water damage.

Fading & Peeling occurs naturally as your siding is exposed to the sun and various elements. This can also happen gradually as your siding ages and is something to monitor as time goes on.

Age can also be an indication that your siding needs to be replaced. Just around the 15-20 year mark, siding begins to deteriorate depending on the material and overall maintenance, making it extremely important to inspect throughout the year.

Warping can be caused by water damage and is detrimental to the structure of your home if left untreated. Both warping and buckling can be signs that your siding is rotting and needs to be replaced.

High Energy Bills may be a sign that your home’s siding or insulation is wearing. This could be an indicator of the outside air creeping in through cracks or holes in your home’s insulation. Increase energy efficiency and save money by inspecting your siding and replacing any damaged or worn-out insulation.

Mold & Mildew occur when moisture is trapped behind your siding. As mentioned, this can be extremely damaging to the structure of your home and can lead to bigger issues such as rotting.

Replacing the siding on your home may seem like a big and expensive undertaking yet it’s an extremely important investment. Not only can it protect the value of your home, but updated siding can make or break the overall appearance of a house or building. Faded, warped, and buckled siding can make a structure look years older than it really is.

We have over 25 years of construction experience in the Central Oregon area and we understand the climate, which is a key factor when deciding what type of siding is best for your home.

In addition to our other services, we now specialize in:

  • Repair & Replacement of siding
  • Cedar Siding
  • Shake Siding
  • Hardie Plank Siding

Leave it to us! We’ll help you choose the best siding for your home with durability, energy efficiency, and maintenance in mind. We’ll take care of everything from installation, to repair, and replacement!

Window Replacement and Repair

Did you know that replacing your single-pane windows with energy-efficient windows can save between $126–$465 a year on your power bill? We can help replace old drafty windows with new energy-efficient windows that will save you money and give your home a cozier feel.

The windows in your home bring in natural light, help with ventilation, and simply look beautiful, making them an integral part of your home. Central Oregon has such amazing scenery and taking in the views from your home is a luxury. Just like siding, your windows will naturally age and wear over time, which is why it’s important to look out for these signs in case they need to be repaired or replaced:

Drafts happen when your windows are not properly sealed, increasing energy bills and making it harder to create a comfortable environment in your home. This could mean that you may need to replace the weatherstripping and caulking around your windows.

Difficulty opening or closing your windows could be an issue with the window frame or general hardware. Warping, swelling, damage, or age can all make it challenging to open or close your windows and mean that they need to be replaced or repaired.

Condensation is another sign that the weatherstripping or caulk around your windows is not properly sealing them. Check for condensation in order to avoid a loss of energy efficiency and further damage to your windows.

Age, just like your siding, is another thing to monitor when considering new windows, and 15-20 years is also a good timeline to keep in mind.

Damage like cracked grass, chips, or broken hardware are signs that you need to repair or completely replace your windows. Not only does damage decrease the safety of your home, but it also affects energy efficiency and the overall comfort inside your home.

There are several styles of windows out there and we can help replace virtually any size or style of window in your home or upgrade your current windows to a different type that will fit your needs better.

Our specialties include:

  • Single and Double-Hung Windows
  • Casement Windows
  • Awning Windows
  • Sliding Windows
  • Bay and Bow Window
  • Garden Windows
  • Fixed and Shape Windows
  • Custom and Specialty

So, which to replace first, windows or siding? This can depend on a few factors. For example, if your siding is clearly rotting or molding, it’s important to handle this before working on the windows. If you notice gaps, holes, or larger cracks, go ahead and handle the siding before diving into the windows. Alternatively, if you see condensation in your windows, avoid further damage by replacing them first. If you’re having difficulty opening and closing them, replace them to keep your home safe, free of pests, and increase energy efficiency. We are happy to help you determine which one to tackle first!

In addition to siding and window replacement and repair, we are now offering roofing services and general exterior painting. Our team of experts can tear off old or damaged roofing and replace it. If you notice damaged, loose, or cracked shingles, algae or mold, or discoloration, these could all be signs that you need to replace your roof. Our climate here in Central Oregon can speed up the aging process of your home’s materials making it so important to keep an eye on its condition!

We are happy to offer such an array of services and feedback to our community! Give us a call today to request a quote for your upcoming summer projects!

Spring Clean Your Yard

SPRING CLEAN YOUR YARD

Now’s the perfect time to clear out the clutter in your home, take on big cleaning projects, and focus on maintenance or repairs. But while many spring cleaning projects can be done inside, the outside of your home is just as important! With the sunny season just around the corner, most of us would consider our yards a place for family, friends, and relaxation.

In our previous blog, we discussed customizing your outdoor space to fit your style and desired function by carefully planning and putting together your dream. Now, we’ll talk about the maintenance and upkeep of your beautiful space. In order to avoid unnecessary stressors during the warmer months, use these tips when spring cleaning your yard!

Check your equipment and tools

Before beginning projects in your yard, make sure you are properly equipped with working tools and equipment. Be sure to replace or repair anything that isn’t in good shape. This is a necessary step to ensure the job is done safely and efficiently.

Clear debris and any leftover holiday decorations

Central Oregon winters can take a huge toll on our yards, leaving tons of debris around our space. Take time clearing large debris first, moving on to smaller raking jobs, and checking on plants that may have not made it through the season. You may even find some leftover holiday decorations that didn’t make the first sweep!

Bring out the rake

Once you’ve cleared out most of the debris, rake your lawn and any garden beds that are covered with leaves to allow for new or re-growth. Remember to utilize tools that are in good shape and not missing any pieces to ensure you do the best job.

Consider using fertilizer

Fertilizer can be great to give your lawn the nutrients it needs to get going again. Research a fertilizer that will best fit the needs of your yard and garden and come up with a good schedule to start spreading it before the upcoming season.

Prune and trim trees and shrubs

Before raking, give your trees and shrubs a good trim to keep them healthy and flourishing. This will also allow you to clean up the overall look of your yard and keep you and your family safe from any branches sticking out in the way.

Edge your garden beds

It’s normal for the grass or even weeds to grow into your garden beds. This can make your yard look messy and can stunt the growth of your garden itself. Clean up your space by creating a defined line between your grass and mulch and remove any overgrowth.

Lay mulch

Mulch can keep moisture and nutrients in and weeds out, making the need to water less frequent. It can also make your yard look polished and intentional, so laying new mulch or topping off an existing layer is a great way to prep for more time spent outside.

Project planning and repairs

When your general cleaning and upkeep are complete, it’s time to start thinking about any other repairs or plans you have for your outdoor space, including planting. April is a great time to start planting summer and early fall flowers or fruits and veggies. You may also find a need to redesign your outdoor space with a pergola, trellis, pavilion, gazebo, outdoor Kitchen/BBQ, fireplace or fire pit, or a pool deck… all of which we can help you with!

Your deck and siding are other things to pay attention to throughout the year as most people tend to notice necessary maintenance when it’s already too late. Siding can either make or break the overall appearance of a house or building. Faded, warped, and buckled siding can make a structure look years older than it really is, and damaged decks can be a real bummer when you have plans for gatherings or wish to hang out outside during the summer.

When it comes to your deck, consider these tips throughout the year and into the spring:

Keep your deck clean

Choose a product that won’t damage the wood or composite material of your deck, sometimes even a little soap and water can do the trick to avoid using harsh chemicals. Another great way to remove dirt and debris is to pressure wash your deck and patio after the winter months. You’ll be sure to notice the difference!

Deck sealing

Sealing your deck is the best way to protect and preserve it. Pay attention to the recommended application suggestion as some sealers need to be applied every year and others every few years. Sealers can either be sprayed or brushed onto your deck however, brushing is far less messy.

Repairs

Make sure to scan your deck and patio for any needed repairs before enjoying them again. Gather the proper tools and don’t be afraid to reach out to us if you need an extra hand or guidance!

Deck finishing- staining or painting your deck

Oil or water-based stains can serve different purposes and their use depends on how much traffic your deck will get or even the effects of our climate. Oil-based stains can take longer to dry but are super durable so plan accordingly! Some wish to paint their decks which can also be a great way to protect them, however, our seasons can lead to quick deterioration and require frequent monitoring for cracks or peels.

Having a great outdoor space is key here in Central Oregon. As we’re still seeing spurts of cooler weather, there have been some great days to get going on cleaning up your yard. Spring cleaning takes time but once you refresh your spaces, they are good to enjoy all season long!

We have over 25 years of combined experience improving backyards and homes and can help you to design and create the backyard of your dreams. Customizing Your Outdoor Space

Spring is in the air and while we’re still seeing flurries here and there, we’re hearing more and more of your outdoor design dreams. Customizing your outdoor area is fun and exciting, no matter how big of a space you have. Because Central Oregon is known for its beautiful landscape and stunning natural features, your outdoor space is the perfect place to enjoy and celebrate everything that Bend has to offer. This year, create a relaxing escape in your own backyard. Customizing your outdoor design can increase your home’s value and provide a comfortable area for you, your family, and your friends to enjoy throughout the upcoming warmer months. Here are some tips to help you get started!

To begin, define your space by deciding what you’d like to achieve from your new design. Are you interested in creating an area for entertaining, growing a garden, or do you want a private oasis where there’s no pressure to do anything but relax? Considering the purpose of your outdoor area is first on the list when beginning your custom design.

Next, plan the layout. How large of an area are you looking to customize? Consider where the sun hits throughout the day if there are certain features or views you’d like to highlight or specify zones to make the most of the space you have.

Once you have the purpose and blueprint, it’s time to start thinking about style and design. Choose a design theme and gather inspiration to complement your home and personal preferences. Do you like more modern and minimalist, bohemian, or mountain chic? There are so many directions you can go when deciding on a design theme, so don’t be afraid to think creative!

Planning is everything when it comes to your home and once this process is complete, it’s time for the fun to begin – watching your vision come to life! Need inspiration for your custom space? Keep on reading!

Mix in natural elements- Incorporate raw materials like stone, wood, and outdoor plants to match the natural environment. Try stone slabs or stepping stones, locally sourced wood patio furniture, or lush plants and flowers to fill in vacant spaces. The Pacific Northwest is home to many native species and therefore the possibilities are endless when it comes to blending these natural elements into your design.

Bring the indoors outside- Building an outdoor living space can range from comfortable seating to a cozy fire pit, or even a gourmet outdoor kitchen. Remember to shop for quality outdoor furniture and other products that can withstand the Central Oregon climate without rusting, fading, or cracking.

Add a garden- Space permitting, our high desert climate is perfect for growing a variety of plants, herbs, veggies, flowers, and shrubs. Adding a custom garden to your space is a wonderful way to enjoy your hard work and the beauty it brings. Plants add texture and color while bringing a sense of life to your yard. Working with a smaller patio or balcony? Potted plants, flowers, or even hanging baskets do just as well! Don’t allow your space to limit you.

Build a water feature- Get inspired by the Deschutes! Many homes can benefit from the calming effects of a pond, fountain, or other water feature. Not only do water features promote relaxation, but they can also help mask neighborhood noise. This can also include entertainment water features like swimming pools or hot tubs. These features are a great addition when it comes to hosting events and parties at your house or simply just creating an enjoyable space for you and your family.

Accentuate a view or focal point- We’re so lucky to be surrounded by so many beautiful mountains and high desert landscapes in Central Oregon. If your home has a view, be sure to plan around the enjoyment of it. Situate patio furniture accordingly and clear obstructing bushes or trees to accentuate your view. If you’re planning on highlighting a focal point such as a fire pit, sculpture, or water feature, lay out your space to add visual interest.

4

Include outdoor entertainment- Entertain your family and friends all summer long with corn hole boards, horseshoes, bocce ball, or an outdoor TV! Including outdoor entertainment is a wonderful way to bring everyone together all season long.

Don’t forget to customize your lighting- Just because the sun goes down does not mean you can’t still enjoy your space. Central Oregon evenings are some of the most beautiful around. Aiming for a soft glow in your outdoor area will help you create a warm and welcoming atmosphere without losing your ability to stargaze. String lights, solar-powered lights, or lanterns can help foster an inviting feel to enjoy in the evening hours.

Accessorize- Tie in your chosen theme and style with outdoor rugs, throw pillows, yard art, or other decorative pieces that make you feel at home. Customization means finding pieces that fit your personal preferences so let your imagination run wild!

Now’s the perfect time to start planning your outdoor design! With careful execution, you’ll be able to transform your space to enjoy it all year round. Although Central Oregon is not known for long-lasting summers, we do know how to appreciate the outdoors, no matter what season it is! We have over 25 years of combined experience improving backyards and homes and can help you to design and create the backyard of your dreams.

Creating the Deck of Your Dreams

4

With over 300 days of sunshine every year, you know that Bend, Oregon offers some of the best weather on the West Coast. What better place to unwind and enjoy it than in your own backyard? Just imagine: summer afternoons spent on your special, handcrafted deck as you soak up the sun with your family and friends.

Not only is a well-built, spacious deck the ideal location for outdoor gatherings, but it also raises the value of your house, which will be a future benefit to you if one day you decide to sell your home. Decks and patios can also make your outdoor space more enjoyable, providing a place to entertain friends, relax in the sunshine, and enjoy the natural beauty that Central Oregon has to offer! And if you’re somebody who enjoys being outside even when the seasons change, then consider upgrading to a covered deck or patio. They make your living spaces more functional and usable all year!

Adding a deck to your home is a great way to incorporate more gathering spaces while utilizing the property you already have. Whether you want an additional space to spend quality time with your family, host events for friends and colleagues, or simply just want a spot to unwind and relax, a deck is a sure way to create a unique element to your home.

There are several ways to improve the appearance of your outdoor space, but having a deck is where the magic begins.

Home

What can a new deck do for you?

As we mentioned, adding a new deck to your home can increase the overall value of your home. Pursuing a deck upgrade has been found to be among the top projects considered for outdoor home improvements. While you get to enjoy the new deck’s addition to your home, you will also benefit from the increased value that it adds in the  chance that you do decide to sell your home.

While any home improvement project may seem like a costly one, these types of jobs will actually help you out in the long run! This is because it will increase the overall value of your home overtime. Often times, your home improvement project will recover a portion of the costs solely from the property sale. So basically, adding a deck to your home is a win-win situation. You get to enjoy the deck and all the benefits it adds to your home while having peace of mind that it will add value and profit to your future sell.

Another great point to keep in mind is that the cost of creating a new deck is more affordable in areas where outdoor activities are more prevalent throughout the year than it is in areas with more extreme temperatures. Since we live in such a recreational part of the state, decks are more common and affordable for our community. We’d love to get in touch with you and share more of the benefits that a deck could provide for your home. If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out anytime.

Deck

Let's talk materials

Real Wood: Cedar and Red Wood

When people consider decking, they often picture real wood decks. Wood decks are extremely common among homeowners. This is due to the fact that wood decks are often less expensive to build and are more enticing to potential buyers.

While wood decks, like Cedar or Red Wood, are less expensive to build, they do build up in cost overtime. It’s important to keep the cost of upkeep in mind when considering these types of decks. They require attention and care, such as sanding, sealing, and staining the deck from time to time. This is because the wood particles are broken down overtime and are susceptible to decay. This does not mean that these types of decks are worth avoiding, though, as they are still great additions to your home! It is just worth considering how much effort and maintenance you are wiling to put into your deck. Our team at Bend Fence and Deck is always happy to help you out with any tips you may need or questions you have when it comes to this type of decking material.

The aesthetic of both Cedar and Red Wood types is widely popular, as they both have a timeless, organic feel. While they are sometimes grouped together, there are notable distinctions between the two. Redwood has a stronger reddish tint than the cedar wood, which is somewhat more on the yellow side. Red Wood boards frequently have a smoother surface and are available in “clear” grade, which denotes that they are made from the resilient heartwood of the tree, have a hardly perceptible wood grain, and are free of knots. Although Cedar and Red Wood are both highly effective for the typical home deck, Red Wood is around 23% stronger. Aside from that, cedar is frequently less costly than redwood.

Options

composite decking

TREX

Easy to maintain composite decking, Trex is a preferred option for homeowners purchasing new decks. This is because of the rising cost of timber and ongoing care that wood structures often require. Trex decking does not require painting, staining, or copious amounts of ongoing maintenance, unlike wood decks. The composite boards only need to be cleaned with a little soap and water or with a short power wash. Trex, which is composted of 95% recyclable materials, is a long-lasting alternative to wood, which is susceptible to decay. This type of decking is built to last up to 25 years and even comes with a 25-year limited warranty, which gives homeowners peace of mind that their decks will last for years to come!

Timber Tech

Engineered with up to 80% recyclable material to be environmentally friendly, Timber Tech is an excellent choice when it comes to affordability – the initial expenditures are just marginally more than for pressure-treated timber. With a 25 to 30-year limited product warranty, you may expect improved performance. Another bonus? There is no need for staining. Ever.

Timber Tech composite decking is designed to appear like your favorite wood species and kinds, and it comes in the widest range of colors and textures, so you may discover your ideal match. With cutting-edge material technology, our decking resists fading and staining and will not splinter, peel, fracture, or decay. As a result, your deck will look and operate brilliantly for decades without the stress and upkeep that you would expect with a wood deck.

Bend Fence and Deck

Concrete

Concrete is one of the most cost-effective decking materials. Versatile in design, you can make a variety of patterns and designs out of the same batch of concrete. In addition to this, you will spend very little money on the concrete once it is placed since it requires little upkeep. Not only is it long-lasting, but it is also significantly less expensive than other decking materials.

Concrete is adaptable, and it may be used to create a wide range of patterns. Concrete decking, unlike other decking materials, may be customized to have a unique look that is best suited for you! Because concrete is fluid before it dries, it may be molded into any shape or design that you would like. It may be finished with a variety of patterns and colors, in addition to stamping and coloring techniques, to make it more appealing and distinctive. You may have the concrete deck constructed to match the façade of your home. Concrete has been used as a decking material for many years due to its durability and low maintenance.

How to get the deck of your dreams

The materials you choose for your deck will be determined by your personal preferences, money, and how much time you want to spend maintaining it. If you value hassle-free living, go for composite decking. Get cedar or redwood if you like the appearance of wood and don’t mind some annual upkeep. If you want to save money, pressure-treated timber or composite is the way to go.

Over the course of more than 25 years in business, we have constructed hundreds of decks throughout Central Oregon and the neighboring areas, making us your local deck specialists. For decking, Bend Fence and Deck works with a variety of materials, including concrete, wood, and composite. As certified TrexPro® and TimberTech® Elite Installers, we are extremely knowledgeable about the materials and are skilled at installing any kind of deck.

Winter Deck Builds: Busting Common Misconceptions

January is here, and while many Central Oregonians are still hitting the slopes and enjoying the winter weather, some of us are already daydreaming about long summer evenings in the backyard. If you’ve lived in the area for a while, you know that the warmer months are unfortunately not going to be here any time soon. Don’t let it get you down though, there’s good news too! Now is the perfect time to get a jumpstart on your backyard projects so you don’t have to waste a minute of your summer waiting for them to be done.

Winter Project Myths

You might think winter is a no-go for construction projects, but we’re here to bust that myth. Those who wait until spring are missing out on some of the great benefits winter construction has to offer. Let’s break down some of these myths and ease your fears about a winter build.

Material Damage

The first thing that comes to mind is moisture. What if it snows? Luckily, snow is a semi-solid material, and can be brushed away easily. We also have the benefit of living in high desert where humidity is often low, especially in the wintertime. Any moisture that is present typically dries out quickly. We’ve been working in this area for a long time and are experienced in navigating Central Oregon’s unique weather patterns. We’ll be sure to do all we can to keep your materials safe so that they last for years to come!

Weather Conditions

Worrying that the unfavorable conditions might compromise the quality of your project? We’re not! We work year-round and are used to everything from the summer heat to the winter cold. It’s all part of the job! We strive to achieve the same level of quality no matter what time of the year it is.

Higher Costs

Because of this season’s weather conditions, you might assume that building costs will be up. Again, we work all year, and the temps outside aren’t something we’ll upcharge for. In fact, we’re currently running a winter special! You can get 10% off your home project when you book in January. Whether you need a fence, deck, window replacement, or repair, now is the perfect time to get started on it.

Winter Project Benefits

Shorter Building Times

Spring through fall is our busiest time of year, so booking now is a great way to avoid a longer waiting list. More of our team is available and able to focus on your project which means we can be fast and efficient.

Easily get permits

If you’re looking to build a deck more than 30 inches off the ground, you may need a permit. Since construction is less busy during this time of year, you’re in luck. The approval process takes less time as there is a lower volume of applications. We can help you navigate what types of permits you’ll need and how to apply for them.

More time to enjoy your new project!

When the weather finally starts to warm up, you’ll be ready to grab your deck furniture, light the BBQ, and sip on a cold drink on your brand-new deck. Why waste a minute of our precious Central Oregon summer?

Let’s Get Started

Ready to make your backyard dreams a reality? Now is the time! When you book a home project with Bend Fence and Deck during the month of January, you’ll get 10% off.

Home Maintenance Checklist for Winter

Ready or not, here winter comes! Autumn is in full swing and before you know it, the snow will begin to fall. Right now is the perfect time to prepare your home for the colder months. If you are unsure of where to begin with winter home maintenance, look no further. We have taken the time to create a checklist for you to consider when thinking about your home winter prep:

Check your heating system

How well do you maintain your heating and cooling system? The typical lifespan of these systems can range anywhere from 10 to 20 years. The life of your heating and AC unit relies on how well your systems are maintained. A great way to prolong the life of your heating system is to replace the filters before the weather gets too cold. This would also be a great time to have an HVAC contractor check your heater to ensure it will run properly all winter. While annual HVAC checks are not required, they are recommended as a resourceful way to stay updated on the life of your system.

Insulate

Insulating your home plays an important role in keeping your house warm for the winter season. This is because insulation acts as a barrier to keep the cold air outside and reduces its ability to be able to find a way inside. If your home is able to resist the cold air outside and keep the heated air in, this will also benefit you financially. Since your HVAC system will not have to work as hard, or frequently, to keep the temperature in your house regulated, you will see a decrease in the cost of your energy bill. This will not only benefit you for winter but will be useful for summer when you want to keep your home cool during the hot months.

Clean your gutters

Gutters are often neglected when it comes to winter home prep. It is common for leaves, pine needles, and other debris to get stuck in your gutters throughout the fall. Clogged gutters are a recipe for disaster as they can cause water to back up and flood out, which damages the exterior of your house. This will cause your exterior to deteriorate quickly, creating all kinds of problems that you will not want to deal with. Save yourself the headache (and money!) by cleaning out those gutters.

Prepare for your snow removal plans

Have a game plan ready for snow removal. By the time the first snow hits, the last thing you will want to worry about is not being prepared with the right equipment. Make sure you are stocked up with your winter tools and snow removal essentials.

We know you will be prepared, but if you do find yourself caught in the snow without a way to escape, give us a call! We are happy to provide snow removal services. We offer hand shoveling for roofs, decks patios, and pathways, as well as snowblower and bobcat work for sidewalks, driveways, and roads.

Caulk around windows and doors

Caulking is a waterproof filler that is used to seal cracks and gaps. Doors and windows are a sneaky spots that the outside air likes to creep in, but you can beat it before it has a chance by sealing up any trouble spots. A good rule of thumb for this is that if the gap is bigger than the width of a nickel, it needs to be sealed with caulk.

Turn off exterior pipes and faucets

Make sure all of your exterior pipes and faucets are shut off. Most faucets are exposed and unprotected outside, which makes them vulnerable to freezing. This can cause splits, and leaking, and could lead to further damage that you will not want to deal with, especially in cold weather. It is beneficial to make sure that the pipes are completely drained and turned off ahead of time before the temperature outside drops too low.

By the time you get through this checklist, you will be able to relax with a hot cocoa, knowing that you are more prepared for this winter.

But don’t forget…if it gets deep, we will dig you out!

Fencing for Farms & Ranches

Central Oregon has tons of beautiful, vast high desert land for ranches and farming, making it a popular place to settle down. Of course, our minds go straight to fencing when it comes to protecting these expansive properties as having a quality fence can help divide land, improve overall appearance, and keep livestock or crops in secure spaces.

There are many different types and styles when it comes to farm and ranch fencing ranging from simple, practical wire enclosures to more permanent, natural wood installations. If you’re thinking about adding a fence to your property, you’ve come to the right place, it’s time to start planning! Here are a few of the most popular types of farm and ranch fencing:

Woven Wire Fencing is suitable for containing livestock and keeping predators out. It can be coated to withstand the fluctuating seasons and can vary in width and height.

Welded Wire Fencing is similar but more durable than woven wire, made from thick wires that are welded together to provide maximum strength.

Electric Fencing is usually used to keep livestock in or predators out. Keep in mind that you will need a power source or solar energy to utilize this type of fence.

Barbed Wire Fencing is durable and great for various types of livestock containment. Be sure to choose a galvanized coating to keep your fence sturdy and strong during the colder months.

Tube Gates are great for pastures and spaces between them. They can also suffice as enclosures for herds.

Horse Fencing requires time and planning as it needs to be strong enough to prevent horses from escaping or damaging your fence. Wooden builds are both visible to horses and can last a long time on your farm or ranch.

Cattle Fencing must be tall and daunting which is why wire is commonly used. Barbed wire or electric fences are appropriate options when meeting these desired needs.

Deer Fencing is necessary in most of Central Oregon as they are often found grazing. In these cases, you want a sturdy fence that is mostly invisible when deer approach it. Mesh or wire are great options, and don’t forget to pay attention to the size of the openings to avoid deer getting tangled or caught on your property.

Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for Fall

The trees are starting to change color and while you may still be holding onto warm summer days, now is the perfect time to prep your property for some cold, wet weather. The last weeks of summer are a great time to do some landscaping, yard clean-up, and annual maintenance around your home. Here are some items to add to your to-do list before the weather turns!

Decks: The type of maintenance needed to prepare for fall and winter will depend on the type of deck you have. Follow these tips to keep things looking good through the colder months!

  • Wooden Decks: We recommend a careful inspection of your deck for signs of fading, peeling, or rot. If these issues aren’t taken care of, they will be much worse in the spring. Wooden decks generally require sanding and staining/painting every 2-5 years. Fall is a great time to get this taken care of so your deck can withstand rain and ice. Replace any rotten or warped boards to further prolong the life of your deck. With careful maintenance, a cedar deck can be expected to last 10 – 30 years before needing any major repairs.
  • Composite Decks: We recommend a semi-annual low pressure wash. Composite decks are extremely durable and don’t require any other maintenance other than cleaning twice a year. These decks are made of durable, long lasting materials that can be buried in snow for the winter and still look good as new in the spring. You will be able to enjoy your Trex composite deck for up to 50 years before needing to replace it.

If your deck is beyond needing a little seasonal maintenance, reach out to us for help with repairs and installs. We are certified TrexPro® and TimberTech® Elite Installers, and have extensive knowledge about and experience with these products and how to install them.

Landscaping: Cleaning up your yard and surrounding landscaping before autumn hits is a great way to make sure it comes back great in the Spring. You’ll want to trim bushes and branches away from your house, your deck, and any other structures on your property. Pulling weeds and removing any excess debris are great tasks to check off as well.

Fencing: As you work on your landscaping, keep an eye out for areas along your fence line that may need attention. If boards are loose or posts are wobbly, you’ll want to get them fixed before the snow starts piling up on and around the structure. We can help with any needed repairs or a fresh install if you’re looking to add a new fence or replace your existing one. As Bend, Oregon’s premier fencing contractor, we can design a great looking fence for any space with a variety of materials and styles. We offer cedar, vinyl, ranch fencing, chain link, gates, lattices, wrought iron, and more. We’ll work with you to create a design that fits your style and budget.

Home Exterior: The outside of your home is just as important as the inside. Keep things looking great through the end of the season by checking on these important items.

  • Gutters: As the leaves start to fall, you may end up with a big job to do on a cold November day. Start clearing them out now and stay on top of it for the next couple of months to avoid a big clean-up project.
  • Windows: Take some time to examine your windows as well. You’ll want to make sure everything is sealed tight before the temperatures drop. Energy-efficient windows can save you between $126–$465 a year on your power bill, so if you’d like to have any or all of them replaced, we can help! We have lots of styles to choose from to keep the cold air out on crisp winter nights.
  • Siding: Summer sun and winter storms can take a toll on the siding of your home. As you work on your maintenance projects, look out for areas that may need replacing. Siding can either make or break the overall appearance of a house. Faded, warped, and buckled siding are all signs of needed repair. We have over 25 years of construction experience in the Central Oregon area and we understand the climate, which is a key factor when deciding what type of siding is best for your home. Give us a call if you notice any spots that need to be fixed!

Keep enjoying those warm summer nights on the deck or patio, you’ll have earned it after taking care of all these projects! If you want us to take any work off your plate, don’t hesitate to reach out and contact us for a quote!
